Witchcraft Study Group Term: the Dead.
Please discuss the Dead in relationship to witchcraft in general, and to your practice in particular.
The dead in general are just everyone who has passed on, died, bit the bullet. However, specifically for my witchcraft, the dead are spirits that I can interact with, that were once alive and are not currently. More specifically are the Mighty Dead, who I consider ancestors of a sort, although they are not related to me. The Mighty Dead are mystics, witches, druids, magicians and so on that have passed on that are important to me. Folks like Andrew Chumbley, Victor and Cora Anderson, Alexi Kondretiev, Ella Young, Madame Levau, Doreen Valiente, Rev. Kirk, Biddy Early, Robert Cochrane and Rev. Kirk are all among the Mighty Dead.
In my practice, I reach out to Mighty Dead by working with their written materials and legends about them and sensing their presence. I might follow recipes, rituals, or other instructions they laid out or that they did as a way of continuing on their legacy. I do particular rituals usually around Samhain to interact with them and they send me dreams with guidance for my path.
I don’t have an altar specifically for ancestors or the dead. Instead I include them in my other altars. So my altar for working with the Morrigan has something to my teacher who also worked with them on it. You get the idea, I have so many altars!
