I wonder if the attitudes people have about wild hair are rooted in fear of unruliness. That people who don’t keep their hair back might not keep other things back too. Their hair is outward proof that they won’t conform.
This is obvious in teenagers with green hair. But much more insidious and a form of sexism about women with loose long hair (even if well cared for)* and even more especially so racism against People of Color with natural hair.
I think it is symbolic and that these folks who are inspired to let their hair down shouldn’t give in and tie their hair in, because its a form of submission to give in. Let them be scared, let them balk, you aren’t wild, you are free.
(I am not commenting the opposite for people who want to do their hair other ways. I am just commenting on the specific phenomena of people with wild hair who have been advised to change it or an inordinate number of comments about wildness have been made about it).
*And men who grow their hair long are often compared to women, reinforcing the sexism there.
